Dental Campaign in Cusco and Sacred Valley. A team of 3 dentists, 3 clowns and 1 photographer came from Lima to check 4 communities i work. First step : a school in Chinchero at the Sacred Valley. The school acrually was about 8 km inside Chinchero, in a community called Chosica. This kids walk almost 2 hours from their houses to the school. Here the school is too basic, and the kids need to develop more. Some mothers showed up, and most of them just speaks quechua. The doctors checked here about 70 kids. While we were working they were cooking for us traditional potatoes with a traditional sauce.
Second step: Paca Community in Urubamba. Once more Celestino organized all the details to receive the doctors. The clowns they did an amazing show entertaining the kids, and even the families participated. Here we had about 45 kids, and the doctors donated toothbrushes, clothes, school material and medicine. Here because of the situation of them living in tents, most of the kids they have ashma and lungs problems.
We went to Ollantaytambo, to stay on the Chaska Wasi Hostal, the next two nights….The next day we were supposed to go to Yanamayo a community about 58 km inside the mountains through Ollanta, at 4500 mts of altitude. Unfortanely because of the rain, the road was closed, so we had to abbort mission. After 4 hours looking for another community , and asking for help from the council, we found a school, in Pancharwhere the kids walk like 2 hours too to get there, and live in andean communities. We had to run, to get there before 1pm, to get the kids coming out from the classes before they going home. The council gave us a truck to go, and me and the doctors we jumped to the back side, holding ourt hands to not fall down. The driver was going really fast, trying to get there as soon as possible, cause it was already 12:50. During that my friend Katty, the owner of the hostal that lives in Ollanta for almost 8 years , was calling to the radio, for them to warn the school we were on the way! As soon as we get there, about 130 kids where in line, with uniforms waiting for us! As they were a lot, we decided with the director, and the dentists to check just the youngest ones. We also gave food for the ones who needed to walk 2 hours to their houses. All of them helped us a lot, organizing all the kids, and the social coordinator from the council was there too and was really appreciated. He told me, since now i could ask for help on the council all the time i wanted, lets see if when its going to arrives the day, that if he is going to remember his words.
Next day, waking up really early again…next step: Cusco in Tica Tica at the school Sembrando Semillas. Here about 35 kids were checked.
We finish at 6 pm, tired but happy. The doctors went to go for a walk in the plaza, while i had to work more. At the end we finish the night drinking Coronas in Loki, and hoping to meet again in June, for another campaign. Was nice to show to them another reality and tradition they cant see on the poorest communities in Lima. It was their first time in Cusco, and they want to came back. It were 4 days of intense work, of a conection with a different “Peru” they are getting used too, and at the end we were friends. 9 persons, 200 kgs of luggage, 4 communities, 205 kids checked. Thanks to everyone: Liz, people at the Chosica School, Sr. Pedro of Diamante Express, Paca Vilcanota Community and Celestino, Katty Vargas and Kelsy Vargas, Chaska Wasi Hostal, Regine, Sr. Syro at the council in Ollantaytambo and the driver, Isaac,Sembrando Semillas, Loki, to all the kids, Sacred Valley, Pachamama and of course to all the profissionalism and good energy from DENTILANDIA KIDS!
